What virtualization product I need?
It is not eazy to choose. Many "big boys" have their own virtualization products but, only VMware is is dealing with virtualization since 1998.
It was a time when virtualization means simply a virtual machine. Now this concept is really complex.
Here are a few clues regarding with VMWare products you may use:
1) Virtual Server
- It is free
- You must install it like any application on a OS.
- There is no technical support.
- It is fully documented
- You can create and manage virtual machines
- You can create and manage virtual networks
It is ideal for learning and, up to a point you can use it in production environment.
2) Server ESX(i)
- It is free as a product but you need to buy technical support.
- You install it, boot from bootable CD and install it like an OS.
- It is recomended in commercial environment
- You have to manage virtual networks and virtual machines created and running on top of the virtual layer you have just installed.
3) Virtual Infrastructure
Just immagine all processes are automated (load balance of multiple virtual machines running on many phisical machines).
There are automated datacentre which are running efficiently being managed by only one tech person.
4) ACE Server
This is a very interesting option if you consider virtualizing all coputers in your copany.
